Meeting of the CEI Ministers of Agriculture

Under the auspices of the Moldovan Presidency to the Central European Initiative, the Meeting of the CEI Ministers of Agriculture with the theme “Countries’ Practices in Sustainable Agriculture Development. Agriculture for Development” was convened on 23 October 2008, with the participation of the majority of Member States and representatives of the CEI Executive Secretariat and Project Secretariat, European Commission, FAO, UNDP and IFAD.

The discussions were centered on acute problems in agriculture, including food security and safety insurance, rural development and living standards improvement, adjusting sanitary and phytosanitary legislation to the EU acquis, world crisis and food prices increase on international level, etc. and viable solutions for the entire region were identified. Methods and ways of achieving sustainable development in agriculture and best practices and experiences of countries in the field were also highlighted.

The participants reiterated the importance of cooperation and exchange of experience between experts from the Ministries of the countries in the region and technology transfer, innovations promotion, establishment of direct contacts between specialists.

It is for the first time when at such a Reunion the Agriculture Focal Points met and they are going to establish a network of experts and to whom will be given some recommendations and guidelines to ensure the efficiency of Focal Points. Additionally, they will assess the necessities, taking into consideration each country peculiarities, in technical assistance in order to implement joint regional projects.

The final document of the Meeting is to be finalized in a few days and sent to countries for implementation.
